Mono Printing on Clay with Clay Slips

Clay mono printing is a new technique that I’m exploring.  Ceramic stain [non-organic colorants] is added to liquid clay along with powdered tempera paint [organic colorant].  These stains are splashed, dripped, drizzled and squirted onto newsprint.  The newsprint is a way to transfer the designs to the clay and not have them so wet.  Stencils, leaves, fish nets, and anything else with a porous texture is used to create a multi layered design.  The newsprint is placed over stencils and pressed into the clays surface with a brayer.  Dried colored slip is sprinkled over various areas to create another layer of color.  After the design is completed, a mono print is pull by laying a fibrous paper on the slab and spraying both surfaces with water.  After checking, respraying and rolling the pastel clay mono-print is ready to be removed.  The stab is then turned into a vessel.  Once fired with a coat of clear glaze finishes the process.
